The Stewart H. Holbrook Mr. Otis paintings collection contains twenty-six Mr. Otis paintings, as well as two reproduction prints, and one painting by Karen Quinn. Several of the more well-known paintings, including Fido Can Set Up #2, are part of the collection. Images which were reproduced in Holbrook's book Mr. Otis (1958) are noted in more detail in the finding aid. All but one of the paintings are oil on canvas, but several are unfinished. While many paintings are untitled, others have typed or penciled titles and notes on the verso.

Prolific author and journalist, Stewart Hall Holbrook (1893-1964), was well known for works of popular history that covered a variety of topics. A columnist for the Oregonian newspaper, Holbrook also published several books. He described these writings as "lowbrow or non-stuffed shirt history." Born in Vermont, Holbrook had traveled throughout North America with his father while still a child, but was left to fend for himself after his father's untimely death.
